Default Greek ship "Polaris"

Has anyone any maritime connections/interests which could shed any light on this oil painting of a cargo ship named "Polaris" with Greek flag, painted by artist G.Yamataka and dated 1958? Any comments/info welcome. Regards all.

Default "Polaris"

Hi Roger,
A postcard history of the passenger liner by CHRISOPHER DEAKES,
mentions Goro Yamataka. Japanese maritime artist commissionned by Mitsubishi to do paintings built of ships constructed at the Yokohama Shipyard. I myself have got a postcard of M.T. "Olympus", built for Olympus Shipping And Trading Corporation. Looks very much like your painting.
Can e-mail a image if you like . Regards , Cornelis.

Hi Cornelis, Thanks for this. I'd very much like to see the postcard. I had tried searching for more info on G.Yamataka but couldn't find anything but knew he must be a recognised artist by the quality of my painting. My email address is art@ranchi2.freeserve.co.uk
King regards, Roger.

In case you haven't seen it, there's a snippet result on google books that says he was a marine engineer, with painting as a sideline:

from The Oxford encyclopedia of maritime history Volume 1;

"In addition, Yamataka Goro (1886-1981), a shipbuilding engineer, used his technical knowledge to produce many high-quality documentary paintings of sea vessels. "

Thanks for this - I hadn't seen it. An interesting addition to his biography. Normal Google search doesn't give any result. The painting is very detailed so his background explains this.

Default What do you want for the painting?

I also have one, are you keeping or selling yours? I would be interested in it, if your selling it. Thanks Jim

Hi Jim, Just for the record, it's not for sale. I was going to direct you to these posts after our contact yesterday but as you have seen these posts not necessary now. I think there will be others out there as technically they are very good paintings. Just a question of waiting for one to surface.
