I've seen this painting before. It shows Paris (you can recognize the Eiffel tower in the back). Sorry the signature is too small to identify the name of the artist.

Different signature, but the paintings look extremely similar.

Hi, This painting looks like a "Burnett" to me. Please see my previous post dated July 8th 2009 0523 entitled ID Painting. It is a very similar scene of Paris and style. The signatures do vary. Consensus is that they originate from Chinese art factories. I have seen several in my local auction house over the past few weeks. They keep popping up. Any further comments on this theme welcome.

Thumbs down

My guess...there are thousands of these pictures out in the market. They look like they are hand painted but a computer machine does it..... out of Hong Kong. They always have an obscure signature and are sold for about £10-£25 in London.

That's an interesting comment. The price is right. In Nottingham they sell about the same price at auction. Many have the Burnett signature which is quite clear. As an oil painted wall filler they are colourful and reasonably priced. I heard they were "assembly line" products but the idea of a computer machine producing them is an interesting concept. Can't really see how they are worth producing at the prices they attain. Anyone got any experience of seeing these paintings on the street in Hong Kong?

Mass produced, but I think they really are hand-painted. Here's an article about the Chinese town of Dafen, where this is the primary industry, from the Asia Sentinel.

"An estimated 70 percent of the world's most copied oil paintings -- as well as the ubiquitous land and seascapes, generic abstracts and winsome big eyed-puppies and children you see in motels, hotels and insurance offices throughout the world -- are brushed up and spat out from within Dafen's 1.5 square miles." We're talking about hundreds of thousands of paintings a year.

Thanks for that article, it confirms the rumours.
On another theme, doesn't this mass production undermine the value of art? Hasn't it done the same to art as Primark has done to M & S? (a British allegory). What is the difference between the original and the copy apart from the provenance?

Wink Unidentified Mass Produced paintings

Thanks one and all for your opinions. Very Interesting..
Having looked closely at the picture I don't belieive it has been computer generated. Being a painter in Gouache myself I still think it was painted by hand.

I am so excited to have found this site and look forward to possibly opening my own work up to pubilc opinion, if brave enough. Thanks to all who have taken to time out to help me and if I definatively find it's origins of this Parisian scene I will of course let you know.

Four more "Burnetts" oil paintings on sale at my local auction house today. All similar Parisian scenes.

Another Burnett oil painting of a Parisian street scene sold at my local auction house for £30.- last Saturday. Signed clearly "Burnett". They keep on coming.

Another 2 "Burnetts" sold yesterday at auction for £12.- (about $20.-). Described as 2 x oils on board Parisian scenes. Both signed Burnett. About 20" x 14" in ornate gilded frames. Just to emphasize the popularity of these they were bought by a local art dealer. They keep coming!
