Default Help to locate information on a painting.

Hi all, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I come with cap in hand as I am trying to locate any information at all on a painting that I saw recently. I managed to get a picture of it in the hope that it may help. I apologise for the poor reflections seen but the ocean can be seen very clearly.

It is approximately 3' x 2', Oil on Canvas and apparently of Victorian origin, this is a copy of a print and therefore no information is printed on it, not even the artists name. it was purchased many years ago as gift from a car boot sale so no help is available from the prior owner.

If anyone can shed any more light on this it would be so appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Did you post a different picture of this a couple of days ago? Someone posted a seascape recently, but I can't find the thread at the moment.

Just found the thread I was referring to. It's the first post here. A very similar painting of sea swells, but not the same one.

... Per the other thread, you could try looking at Aivazovsky or even Ribcowsky. There must be a few other artists who tackled this kind of subject regularly, but I can't think of any offhand.

Another was the British painter Henry Moore (1831-95)
