Looks to be someones impression of Vermeer.
![]() I am not positive but I believe that this could be a mannequin in front of Vermeers 'The Art of Painting' at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Perhaps a painting of the mannequin being prepared as the other figures look somewhat smaller. [Edit] I found this info on Johannes Vermeer that may help. Through his art, he manipulated the appearance of the tuck, fold, textural qualities and lighting to convey his own aesthetic concerns. Sometimes, prevailing fashions such as the typical black clothing of the early 17th century left the artist few opportunities to indulge in the finer points of his craft. Fanciful, expensive dress and even jewelry might be lent to the painter for the more extravagant portraits. Back in the studio, the artist would duplicate the lighting, pose and dress of the sitter with the aid of a life-size mannequin so that the complex patterns of tuck and fold would not be altered every time the sitter moved. Photoshop is a photo manipulation software package. I believe the poster was saying that the second image above was created by photo editing rather than by using a mannequin.

Good show Hercules! Never heard of Gerrit Terborch before today.
It didn't quite look real to me either. Even in the painting the woman does not look real. I wonder why someone would photoshop an image from a Gerrit Terborch painting over this photo of a Vermeer painting at the Essential Vermeer site? Is it because they were both Dutch Masters? I do think that the other figures in the painting are rather short compared to the woman. |
