Who painted a very dark oil of an old man sitting in right profile with a bushy white beard wearing a big round topped hat with a huge round brim. He looks like a rabbi , reading or studying. I've checked all the Rembrandts-no luck. S REYNOLDS reproduced this painting years ago(36x36). The hat, black cloaked shoulders are barely visable. It's his face that is striking! Help, I've been searching for years-no one recognizes this painting. Loretta

1/Rembrandt - AN OLD MAN WITH A LONG WHITE BEARD, SEATED, WEARING A WIDE CAP, HIS HANDS FOLDED /1654. The Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
2/Rembrandt - A RABBI SEATED, A STICK IN HIS HANDS AND A HIGH FEATHER IN HIS CAP /1645. The Hermitage, St. Petersburg. I see that you checked Rembrandt, however, this is the closest I can find to your description. Edit: 3/ - How about this one attributed to a follower of Rembrandt. You can take a look here for works that were doubted or attributed to followers of Rembrandt. - http://staff.science.uva.nl/~fjseins...1624_1631.html Last edited by Eirene : January 29th, 2010 at 08:06 PM. |

Thanks John. Although I'm not sure that this is what Loretta is looking for, none of these truly fits the description.

No, it's not any of the above. The hat (could it be Spanish, Cleric or French) seems to be the key. The profile is a true one...only one eye is visible. Loretta
