Default Identify Modigliani

Hello,

Can any Modigiani expert please help with naming this painting? It's signed by Modigiani and I believe the model is Jeanne Hebuterne?

Sorry if the picture isn't the best but I came across the picture while doing a building survey - and the home owner certainly knew her Modigiani (she was happy I took the photo, I should add!) - but I forgot to ask the name of this one, assuming I'd find it on Google. Alas, no luck so far.

The picture was about 16" wide, if that helps.

It's a beautiful image and reminds me of someone very much so I should like to find a print.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

By no means an expert on Modigliani, however, I am somewhat familiar with his work and have never come across this painting before. Checked at the Modigliani Foundation which has his complete works and do not see it listed there. I have brightened up your picture and it does not look like his style. I could be wrong. Here is a comparison. You can check yourself at http://www.modigliani-foundation.org/

Jeanne Hebuterne.

Sure it is by Modigliani since on the cover of one of the numerous books of Parisot, a true specialist of the master's work.

My bad saintmarc. I wonder why I am unable to find that painting anywhere?
Do you know the title?

Here's a little info on Christian Parisot. Any update on the appeal?

Modigliani expert sentenced

From issue 191, May 2008
Published online 1 May 08 (market)

PARIS. The art historian and Modigliani specialist Christian Parisot was sentenced to two years in prison with 16 months suspended, and fined E8,000 ($12,000) by a Paris court on 18 April, for faking drawings by Jeanne Hébuterne, Modigliani’s mistress and model. Ms Hébuterne committed suicide, pregnant and aged just 21, the day after Modigliani died in 1920. In 2002, Parisot organised an exhibition of her drawings in Segovia, Spain: however, many works were seized by the police after Luc Prunet, Jeanne’s great nephew, claimed they were forged. This has since been confirmed in a court-ordered report by the French expert Gilles Perrault. Nevertheless, Mr Parisot denies the charges and is appealing the verdict. Only three Hébuterne works have ever appeared at auction; one, an undated Portrait de Femme, sold for FFr116,000 ($15,804) in 2000 at Drouot. G.A.

Note that the homeowner's version is almost identical to the book cover version (from what you can tell given the quality of the photographs), except that it is shorter. The wall goes up much further on the book cover reproduction.

This book is at low price and I hate the unanswered questions. See you within some days.
John, It could have been photoshoped by the editor to fit the size of the collection
Eirene, I had forgotten this info about Parisot. I am going to get more info.

Well..well, well. Fresh, very fresh news
On january 2010, the 11, Christian Parisot get two suspended years and €50000 for the fakes Hebuterne
More, he was arrested at the end of the scene for having done a fake Modigliani and sold it for 80000€
omg! Art : your pitiless world!
Should I speak now about "a dubious specialist of the master's work"

Interesting to say the least. Some people are never satisfied with what they have. Greed takes over. Such a shame.

Here's an old article regarding forgeries with some more info on Perisot.

Yes, I think this is the painting that is reproduced on the book jacket. If you look closely, even the scuffs and smudges are in the same places.

But I must say, I don't approve of Photoshopping the painting to make it taller. We see reproductions of paintings all the time that must be cropped in order to fit the available space -- that's acceptable if not ideal. And superimposing lettering is understandable for a book cover. But forging an extra section of the painting in order to make room for the title? That's not right.

You would think that being a renowned art historian that the author would know not to alter the artwork. It obviously doesn't matter what is right or wrong as long as he made his money. No scruples

Thanks everyone for tracking this down. Once I knew the title it was pretty easy to find some additional info, http://static.royalacademy.org.uk/fi...nt-guide-4.pdf.

The print is even for sale, at Myartprints.co.uk, but it seems that my pocket shall have to suffer for this particular piece of art :-)

Thanks again.

A very hard to find print. AllPosters.com only has it in black and white.

Try here see if it's cheaper.
