HI...
I have to write a persuasive paper on american art. What are the criteria (standard expectaions) for american art? What purpose should it serve? |

Raschel,
This is a difficult question to handle in general - given the incredible variety in American art. My suggestion would be to narrow your focus by selecting an artist and/or a movement and then ask the question of meaning more specifically. E.g., you could look at George Inness, the landscape artist and relate his late work to the movement identified as Tonalism: artists like Bruce Crane, Henry War Ranger, Charles W. Eaton. The "Artcyclopedia" parent site to "Artconversation" is a highly useful resource. There are also several good books on Inness. Or, pick some other artist/movement and check out the art and essays on it. another good option in American painting is the Hudson River School of the 19th century. Criteria and purpose are really highly specific issues - unless you are trying to raise questions about the broad cultural significance of art, but even that can only be answered with reference to specific works of art.
