Does anyone know what this stamp means on the back of a painting I have signed P. LaCroix.
Do you think this could be from the Paul LaCroix who immigrated from France to NewYork. He did very few landscapes only one I can find on the internet....please advise what you may think and what the stamp means. |

"Douane" is "customs" in French. "Haarlem" is a town in the Netherlands.

Is there any way I could somewhat date the stamp....and exactly what it means -- any advise would be great. Thanks for noticing the Haarlem -- I didnt notice that extra A at all...that is why I am novice on anything art.
Look forward to hearing back..... |

I have been searching a little more and found paintings of Pierre LaCroix.
The painting are of Maastricht, a Dutch city. Is the signature of your painting the same as this one? |

No -- I dont think it looks the same...but I may be wrong.
I have seen the still-life landscape painter Paul Lacroix's signature in later still life works -- not exactly like mine but still has the same fancy Antiqua style of printing. Whenever I see a description of his paintings on the net and cant see his signature -- it is always describe as P. LaCroix...with the capital C. Maybe he signed that way in the beginning before going to New York or maybe I have an entirely different artist. I have also found on the net that the New York State History Collection in Albaby has some of his early work of European cities, drawings etc. It mentions in the museum site Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum third museum on this link http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists/lacroix_paul.html Anyways here is his signature....I really appreciate your advise and look forward to hearing from you. |
