My grandfather bought this painting in 1946 for my grandmother in a 2nd hand store on Webster Ave in the Bronx for $120. The print on the back is quite faded and reads: "Der Konill Iquialoe Galerie zu Dresdn". Thanks in advance for any information.

It's an exercise in "chiarioscuro" (exaggerated contrast between light and dark) which appears to be from the Baroque era. A few artists who worked in this style are Gerrit von Honthorst, Georges de La Tour and Joseph Wright of Derby.
Most likely it's a copy, but I don't recognize the original that it would be based on offhand. |

I never would have guessed that was Rubens. So humble and intimate compared to most of his work. Even his simple portraits usually have a kind of force or boldness to them that he doesn't aim for here.
