Default Anybody Recognize this Man?

Hi, I know who the artist is (I'll post it later), but I am wondering who the subject of the portrait is. Most likely it is an American and likely a prominent political/literary/artistic figure. Any ideas? I would guess the work dates from approximately 1900-1930.

Interesting. It looks like some works of Zorn.
I spent the night on this white John douglass without success for the moment

Thanks for trying. (I think you mean Frederick Douglass, and that's actually a pretty good comparison.)

Okay, here's the rest of the story... The artist is American printmaker Franklin Tyler Wood (1877-1945). This work was up for auction today and my wife had put in a bid, so I didn't want to inadvertently encourage anyone else to outbid us. We won! Our high bid was only about $100.

Here's a gallery site with a couple of superb examples of his work (and a couple that are not as impressive):

Note that I still want to know the subject of the portrait if anyone recognizes him. Unfortunately a lot of his works are titled "old man" doing this and that, so it may be that this was intended to be an "ideal" figure rather than a portrait of a specific person.

Thanks in advance.

Cool to be acquainted now John! I assumed you did know it was somebody. Finding nothing on some databases I am on the page 680/2294 of the public and historical portrait collection of the NYPDL that's to say about 13600/45800 images.
I am going on now. Thanks Lord for this three days rest!

I hope you mean NYPL. If you're looking through the New York Police Department Library of mug shots, that would be going too far.

Anyway it's not like I'll die if I don't find out. It's just that the combination of the tie with the wild hair and passionate eyes makes him look romantic, flamboyant, driven. I imagine him being a preacher or a poet or a symphony conductor.

NYP DIGITAL L.
And, by the way, yes I meant Frederick.
I am going on because I think an artist wouldn't have given an imaginary person a tie.
