I am trying to trace a painting which was seen by my father when visiting Capetown during the Second World War. I have corresponded with a curator there who cannot find any reference to this painting which I will describe to you - unfortunately my father has no recollection of the artist!
He thinks it is called Hope (or maybe Peace). It is a large work featuring a woman placed centrally and illuminated. All around the edges of the painting, emerging from the darkness as it were, are soldiers of many different periods: dad remembers especially a Roman soldier and a Dutch soldier but he doesn't recollect any horses in the picture. He has suggested it is in the style of the flemish/dutch masters - I have also looked at possibly similarly styled paintings by Paul Delaroche, Ferdinand Bol, Jaques-Louis David,Van Dycke and Caravaggio amongst others. My father has tried to find the painting through his local library but to no avail. Of course, being 84 means that although his long-term memory is excellent, the passage of time must affect what he is remembering! I have spent many hours searching the internet, but with no success. If you do not recognise such a painting, or do not know of anyone who might, perhaps you are able to direct me to any sources that would be able to help. Many thanks for your attention, Lyndsay Fielder lyndsay.fielder@btinternet.com |

There is a famous painting called "Hope" by a Victorian artist called George Frederic Watts
See it here: http://www.artmagick.com/archive/art...pic/10021.aspx |

Thanks for replying but it is not that painting by Watts.
Further information: there is also a cavalier soldier wearing a brimmed hat with a large feather in the picture. Perhaps this helps to date it more precisely? |

Barack Obama makes reference to this painting in his book 'Dreams from my father'.

Thank you, but this reference by Barack Obama is to the painting called Hope by Watts. I'm beginning to think that the painting I'm trying to trace isn't called Hope!
