My mother came across this artwork roughly 20 years ago at an estate sale, not much is known about the artist, medium, location and date. My best guess is that it is a colored pencil sketch somewhere in New England between 1812 or 1912.
The foreground depicts what looks to be polish immigrants in period clothing along a beech with a dock and some reeds. The background depicts an abandoned church with what I believe is a cannon ball damage to the steeple. It appears to be resting on a large body of water. There are initials in the lower left corner M.R.S. ‘12, the paper is course (feels like Manila paper) and it is showing signs of aging. Any Help identifying the artist, medium, location and date would be appreciated Thank you for your time, |

Assuming the "M.R.S." and "'12" are reliable, here is a list of artists from my files who are possible matches. This is far from comprehensive, of course -- for example, I omitted artists who I only know as "M.S.", as there are just too many to list.
- Savart, M.R. (French) - Schauffler, Margaret Reynolds (American, born 1896) - Schramm-Zittau, Max Rudolf - Sheppard, M.R. (British, active 1826) - Stamper, Maybelle Richardson - Stanbery, Mary R. (American, active early 20th century) - Steele, Minnie R. |

Thank you very much!!! I will attempt to determine if any of these artists match.
