Question Please help ID very old painting

Hi,

I was hoping you could help me. I know this is difficult over the internet, but I figured I’d give it a shot.

My father found this painting 50 years ago. It was wrapped in a small Nazi flag along with other items from WWII. He had it looked at by an expert 40 years ago, and the person who looked at it believed it was from the 1500’s. However this is all he could offer.

It is painted on a thick piece of oak. There is no signature or other markings, just the paintings.

Any information you could offer would be helpful. Thanks for your time, it is truly appreciated.

I don't think there's any way this came from the 1500s. Of course this is just a first thought based on that slideshow, and you'd be better off showing the original to a dealer who buys and sells such works, but this looks like a 19th-century painting of a Classical subject in the style of Bouguereau or Alma-Tadema (but not up to that standard).

Thanks for your reply. I know little about paintings, and even less about this one! I found the links to the two artists you mentioned very interesting. This will be a learning experiance for me.
