Help with painting ID?

Hi everyone, I came across your site today and it looks great.
I'm having trouble I.D.'ing an oil painting. The only thing I know about it is it arrived in the U.S. from England around 1900 (via my wife's family).
I can't make out the signature, it looks like "PeT PA DE" to me but I could be wrong on all parts....

Any thoughts, inputs, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

A painting by Karl Kaufmann 1843-1905 (also said 1843-1901)who painted sometimes under the name of "Leo Perla"

Thank you very much stmarc, I think you nailed it!
Now that I look at it, the signature could very well be "Perla"...
