I have been trying to identify the name and artist of this piece in the vatican museum.
http://www.umsl.edu/~kzrmbb/Rome%20P...70162_edit.JPG I thought it was "Salome holding John the baptist's head" or maybe "Judith and Holofernes." But I can't find this painting under either of those subjects. Please help, thanks! |

I have trouble believing that woman is Salome or Judith.

I have found some more information about it. It is in the Sobieski room in the vatican and from the 19th century.
Here is a link to where I found that info: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606598 |

I finally found it! I had to search the old texts scanned in by google books. Apparently the painting isn't famous enough to be labeled anywhere but in a book written in 1896!
Its a painting of St. Grata holding the head of St. Alexander. It was painted by Pontian Loverini in 1884. Here is the book: http://books.google.com/books?id=oGI...page&q&f=false You can find the painting on the top of page 218 |
