We have two paintings by J KINGMAN. I have studied the pictures and signiture that have been loaded. The signitures are identical and the subject the same. ours are done on canvas and have a 3 D appearance We purchased ours in 1974 from an antique shop in St Mary Church Torquey South Devon. We did ask the owner if the painter was known and he said it was a local artist. Really intersted if anything else comes to light.

Hi Sheppard
Welcome to the treasure hunt! As you can see I am in Australia & it has been hard for me to track this Kingman down but you may hold the key. All the people I have contacted have paintings from Cornwell, Surry, down as far as St Ives, and of course all around Torquey. I read a post from a person who puchased two paintings from a house sale who asked the lady who the painter was and shes stated that her father commissioned a Bristish ex army man to paint the paintings she had. They fit in with my painting, being the age 60 years, which would place this English soldier in Australia at that time after the war. I have found people all over the world with paintings by Kingman. Yours in the first I've heard of by a J Kingman. I've researched the Torquey area and find there is a lot of Kingmans living there. Maybe relatives from the Kingman painter. Your answers may be to search in this area. If you are succesful it would be great to post up here for all of us in the dark. I would like to see your paintings and signature if you can post them up on here as I am sure this will create more interest. John D... |

I also have a painting by Kingman, 21 1/2 X 24 of a water fall flowing into a river but surrounded by deciduous trees. Not for sale, very beautiful and peace inspiring. This Kingman signed with a cap K and remainer of name in lowercase all painted in white one letter at a time. I will show after I insure and if I ever get to upload the way I think I should. This painting style is different than the painter of dogs who signed with all caps; i.e. the dogs have muted back grounds whereas the waterfall scene emphasizes sunlight and surrounding detail. My painting could be a lithograph with painted accents similar to what Thomas Kinkaid does to his productions. webtowner from California |

Hi Sheppard
In regards to your posting I'm still interested in a copy of the signature on your paintings. Are you able to photograph them and send it to my email: pagancouple@hotmail.com. As I stated I have not seen a J Kingman signature as yet and would like to compare the style to the one I have. If it is the same, the "J" may be a vital link to discovering more about the painter. I too have a painting of two small game birds and an English Pointer. It was purchased in the early 80's at Talbot Galeries in Lancaster Lancashire England by my husband and myself. The gallery is unfortunately closed. We were told at the time that he was a British artist who specialised in " hunting and shooting scenes" plus that he very collectible in America
We still have (somewhere) the original bill of sale (as I am a squirrel). The painting is called"Flushing the Game". It is 24" by 20" oil on canvas in a gilt frame. The Kingman signature is in capital letters in black in the right hand corner. No initial just thevsurname. We paid approx. £240 for it in the 1980's. My husband went back to the store a number years later and the proprietor looked up the painting and told him that the value had doubled. I am now doubtful about this as there seem to be so many of the around I wonder if they are all the same or have minor varioations or Kingman found a best selling theme and turned out loads of them. Howevere like everyone else I know nothing about the actual peron who is the artist. Celia G |

We too have recently aquired a Kingman... hunting dogs flushing out a game bird, oil painting. It has the same signiture as John (Malyon) is showing.
We bought it, not knowing anything other than we liked it and it seemed a good price for an oil...(I honestly thought it could be a chinese factory painting) but now I am as intrigued as the rest of you! I have found this on ebay if anyone is interested!?... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2808220971... .m1423.l2649 |

Here's a link, which will work for a few months until the listing gets purged. Not sure why yours didn't work.

There is another eBay item of interest, Item number: 230745635763, a 1971 painting by Dong Kingman. The signature is the same as at www.justanswer.com/antiques (as per my previous) and not the same as posted above by John on the 'dogs and game bird' pictures.
The other ebay item,no 280822097153, is ambiguous in its initial descriptive heading in that it could imply that the picture is 'genuine 1850' and not just that the frame is 'genuine 1850'. It is described as an oil but further down the listing it is a 'watercolour, Seascape, 1900-1949'. (Dong Kingman was born in 1911). If it is an oil, it is unusual for an oil to have a mount; unusual to match a painting of value with a non-contemporary frame. Last edited by Tal : February 17th, 2012 at 04:40 AM. |

Hi Sam
Thanks for your contact re Kingman, I feel by your picture and signature that it is a Kingman. If you go back through the posts I think that the posting by SHEPPARD talks about a J Kingman signature which I myself have never come across. However the Kingman part of the signature is the same. I have attached a picture of my Kingman signature for your consideration. I can discern a slight difference in the "G", outside of that it appears the same. I have another poster from the UK sending me a disc with signatures he has collected and when it arrives I will compare them to yours and get back to you. It appears Kingman was a well travelled man, or at least his paintings are with posting from all over the world. My painting I believe was painted in Australia because it has been painted on Burney Board. Burney Board is smooth on one side and has the appearance of canvas on the other side. Burney board is an Australia product but not aware if its available anywhere else in the world. My painting appears to be of an English setting but I feel it is more likely to be Canadian and yours is very similar in appearance. Its been very difficult to find out about Kingman and it appears that the people who have put up the postings on the art forum have only wanted to verify the signatures and have not communicated with others re any possible origin of Kingman or their paintings. We have one posting that suggests he may be English from the Torquay area. My investigations have confirmed that there is a lot of the Kingman clan still living in the area, I think if everyone put up any or all snippetts of information on the Art forum our investigations might turn up a result about Kingman, whether they be male or female, origin of country, whether they were in the war, or well travelled. I hope you don't mind but I would like to post this email up on the forum. If this is not good for you please advise and I will remove it. Cheers John D... |

Hi John, the same blog I found you on has a few folks talking about a Kingman family, one of whom was a famous painter. But they all knew of an Australian artist who signed his name in white printed letters as Kingman J. And they have provenance for finding several pieces of his work that was found during WWII years...
I actually bought this oil painting at a yard sale in a nice neighborhood! I know I didn't pay more than ten dollars for it! But it is in expensive, old canvas and canvas frame framing. Also, it was certified by Home Galleries #346476 as an oil painting by Kingman J. I am still working with someone to get th actual provenance on this painting. I buy and ssell all the time. So, wish me luck and will certainly let you know alll I find out! thanks again! Sam George -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Sam, very interesting you think it came from Australia! What makes you feel it came from here? So far I haven't found any other paintings from Australia but thats not to say there aren't more. I am interested in how you came by this painting too? Look forward to your reply Cheers John D... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please feel free to post this email as you will. I am so curious. I believe someone acquired this painting frm Australia around the 1950s or so. I would love to share the info I acquire as well. Thank you. sam George |

Regards afloy Hi afloy Thanks for letting me know about the hardboard you have over there. Its good to know and I also know of a few artists that have used this medium to paint on. I have posted up Sams emails, with his permission , to see if we can generate a bit more interest in gathering snippets of information that will lead us to more knowledge about Kingman and his origins. We may then be able to solve the puzzle my friend. Thankyou for sending the disc, we haven't received it yet, but expect it will be here early this week at our new address. While we are not moved yet. we are up there every other day to check the mailbox. We will let you know as soom as I receive it. I will forward the photo of the signature and painting that Sam has sent to me for your collection. Cheers John D... |

Hello TC in Texas post 23 and Web Towner Califonia post 63.
I now have some thing in common with you two, we have the pleasure of owning a Kingman Oil Painting (lower case signature in white) The one I have is the same size as TC Texas. I recently purchased this from some one in wales. The seller stated that his uncle had shipped the painting over from america. Still trying to find out further details. Web Towner I like your theory about lithrography, especially when these three paintings sound so alike, with the slight difference of the size. The one I have is painted on Board. Would like to compare please send to afloy@tiscali.co.uk. I will recipicate. John Duncan you should have this on the power point I sent you assuming you have recieved. Kindest of regards to all who are still interested. Keep watching this board I hope to have further news shortly. Quote:

Most of the preceding posts are in reference to another painter who signed his works "Kingman". This artist did realistic sporting paintings that are quite easy to tell from Dong Kingman's work.

Thank you for posting so soon. Surfed the net and came across Joyce Kingman. I found some of her artwork on eBay. The letter "A" is pointed at the top whereas Dong Kingman's is rounded. Hope this helps others.

Hi Folks
My Kingman is not of dogs or animals of any kind it is of a forest scene with a stream, the trees look to be Canadian Redwoods, but not sure. Any Ideas John |
