I would be grateful for any information about this portrait which has been in my husband's family since at least the late 1800's. We have had it partially cleaned, and it has the following information on it:
Pimscit L. Whitton 1735 It is possible that it is an ancestor of my husband, or it may have been bought by my husband's g-grandfather in whose house it was located. He was Leopold Stanton, who built up a very sucessful lace business in Maidford, having started from very humble beginnings. Leopold could have bought it to adorn his walls and perhaps impress visitors. However, we came across a portrait (black and white) of a Valentine Barford (1675-1746) who also lived in Northamptonshire, and were struck by the similarity between the two pictures. Leopold’s wife, Rhoda Kendall, is the 4th great grand-niece of Valentine Barford so it is possible that the portrait came to her through her great-grandmother, Elizabeth Barford. Her direct ancestor Barford, who was Valentine's brother, was a day labourer, so was unlikely to have his portrait painted. I would be grateful for any information about the painter, and any suggestions as to what occupation is suggested by the subject's clothing, as this might help to pin down who it represents. Many thanks |
