Default Help Identifying Painting - 1800's sailing

Hi- I was hoping to find out who painted this wonderful picture because the previous owner for some reason trimmed the painting and took off the signature. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

The picture was framed by the John Snedecor company (stamp on the back of the painting) in the second half of the nineteenth century and the as the night is depicted as black instead of the historical blue I believe this picture originated around this time also.

Here are some not so great snap shots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51995933@N06/

There's an article here about a sale of some stock of the John Snedecor gallery in 1873

http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive...668388669FD E

It mentions the names of quite a few artists whose works he dealt in. Most interestingly, a painting of "Fishing Boats" by E. (ie Edward) Moran (1829-1901.)

He seems to have painted some pictures very close in style to the one you have

http://landandseacollection.com/id555.html (Very close, though I don't know how reliable the attribution is)

So that would be somewhere to start looking, though of course Snedecor probably handled other artists who worked in a similar style.

You might be interested in reading this New York Times article on John Snedecor dated March 30, 1873. He had quite the collection of paintings. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?_r=1&res=9502E2DB163DE43BBC4850DFB5668388669FD E

I am no expert by any means but could this possibly be by Edward Moran?

EDIT: LOL Hercules...too funny!
