Default Assistance with an artist's name...

Hello, I was wondering if anyone can assist me in identifying the name of the artist on this painting that was handed down to me from Munich in 1875. If anyone can assist me in identifying the name of the artist I would be greatly appreciative. I am attaching a picture.

Thank you very much in advance.

I read that as HS Chase ie Harry Chase (1853-1889)

There's someone selling a print after his work here

http://cgi.ebay.com.my/ws/eBayISAPI....CI% 26otn%3D4

I assume the information they give is taken from a text on the print:

"This excellent Marine painting is by an American artist who has for several years resided in Europe. Mr. Chase is a native of Vermont, born in 1853, and about 1876 went to Paris and studied art under Soyer. He sent to the Paris Salon of 1878 "English Fishermen," and to the National Academy, New York, the same year, " Kullen Point, Sweden." Mr. Chase is better known in Europe than in his native America. He is fortunate in having ready sale for his art works, very few of them coming to America. Indeed, he for the present might more properly be classed with the Munich School than with any other, because his chosen residence is in the Bavarian Capital.
....... The atmosphere of all Mr. Chase's pictures is salty and natural to the ocean. The artist is a natural born lover of the ocean in her stormy moods, and a more truthful interpreter in the present day and generation of the sea in its grandest effects is not to be found in any land than the young American, H. S. Chase."

More here
http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=P...ich%22&f=false

which implies Chase went to Europe a little earlier, thus allowing the date of 1875 to be credible.

Is Harry Chase's middle initial "S"? I can't find any reference to him using it.

Also, what do you think that mark at the end is? I think you're right about the name being "Chase", but in that case the last symbol might be "jr."

The only reference I can find to "HS Chase Jr " is on the ebay link; but it does seem to be a contemporary reference, and the biography seems too similar to be a coincidence.

Default Could this be the same Chase?

I found something on Henry Chase who sometimes used the name Harry Chase.
Harry Chase, born in 1853 in Woodstock, (Vermont) was one of the greatest marine artists of his time and many summers he spent running in and out of the harbors about here, on his yacht "Bonnie" sketching and painting. Nonquitt and New Bedford knew him well and several of his paintings are owned here. "The Homeward Bound Whale" isa well known picture of his and "Making Port", now in possession of Ned Stanley, is famous. Chase had studied in Germany, Holland and France under celebrated artists but came here from St. Louis. Just how far his skill would have carried him we cannot tell, for he became insane and died in Swannee (Tennessee) in 1889. He is also known as a painter landscapes.
He is listed in
Bénézit 1976 , dl. II, p. 687
Busse 1977 , P. 227
Fielding/Carr 1965 , P. 62
Witt Checklist 1978 , P. 57

Could this be the same Chase?

Default H.Chase

I found three signatures for Harry Chase and they don't quite look like the one in your painting.

Default Henry Seymour Chase Jr.

Hello Aaron,

This is indeed Harry Chase, also known as HS Chase, Henry Chase, Henry S. Chase, and Henry Seymour Chase Jr. He studied in Munich from 1872 until 1875. I have been researching his life and work for 6 years and can probably answer just about any question you may have about him. Do you have a title for the painting? Would it be possible to post a photo of it here? I have a large database of his work that I have assembled and might be able to help you with more information about the painting. You can contact me at my email address as well - j.b.chace /at/ gmail /dot/ com

Cheers,

Jeffrey Chace
