The view of this painting is looking into a room thru a door frame
(there is no door). The colors of the room's interior are dark and somber. A near-waist-high counter runs the length of the left side of the room. A young woman is standing at the counter, her body positioned to look to the left (thus you are seeing the left side of her). Her wrists are turned to allow her hands to grasp the edge of the counter. She stands somewhat on tip-toe and stares, presumably, out of the window and down onto the street below adding a tension to the setting. The bright sunlight coming into this room from the window on the left wall brilliantly illuminates and highlights her face and shoulders. Believe her dress has a white yoke covering her shoulders. This work was not done by Vermeer but it may have been done about that time. |
