Hi all,
I'm trying to identify this painting. The Library of Congress has a black and white photo of it, but I'm looking for something in color. LOC lists it as: TITLE: [Cesare Borgia seated with Machiavelli] Reproduction of painting by Faraffini(?). <img src="http://memory.loc.gov/service/pnp/cph/3c00000/3c00000/3c00700/3c00795t.gif" link to LOC record and larger version: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/...@lit(90714314)) I have never heard of Faraffini, and I can't find anything about him on Google. Anyone know who painted this and where it's located? Thanks a ton! Dan NEH |

Greetings,
All I could find online was another black and white image. Painting also known as: "Cesare Borgia and Niccolò Machiavelli in Conversation" - 1899 painting by Faraffini. http://www.cosmeo.com/viewPicture.cf...06D4C&&nodeid= Judy Decker |

There are so few hits for "Faraffini" (basically none, except for these references which may come from the same source) that my best guess is that it's a typo.
Suggestion: Serafini. It's not that close to the original, but Artprice lists several artists by this name. I can't think of any closer matches that are plausible. [added - actually none of the listed artists appear to have been active circa 1898, but it seems like a plausible name] |

Thanks Judy. I'd found the Discovery listing too. I think they just took the image from LOC and copied the information without really verifying it. Otherwise I think they'd give Faraffini a first name. I can't find record of this painter anywhere, which is strange because he's very good.
