Default a Victorian artist?

I'm inquiring about the artist, origin, and style of a large oil painting I own. Before I get an appraisal and pursue restoration of significant wear and tear, any shared thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Could be John Whitehead Walton, a British painter who seems to have specialized in portraits and who frankly was not that good. There are some paintings online but I was not able to find a signature.

There was also a are British artist from the 19th century by the name of J. Walter Wilson, but I don't know anything about him.

Default Walton confirmed

Thanks, John! I appreciate your reply to my post. Based on the name of the British artist you supplied, John Whitehead Walton, I contacted the National Portrait Gallery in London. An assistant curator in the archive replied and confirmed Walton as the artist; the signature is similar to other Walton signatures on record, including the portrait of Joseph Hume. This is a late work by Walton, who exhibited in London between 1834 and 1865. However, no indication on who the subject is, except that she is "a wealthy lady of fashion and quality judging by her attire and poise." The next journey, to find out who the lady is, officially begins. Again, thank you, John Malyon and ArtConversation!

Great! You can find some past sales of his work at the Artinfo Art Sales Index. Looks like his work is moderately valuable, but a professional appraiser could give you a much better idea.
