Hello:
I have a number of 19th century engravings. etchings, sepias, mezzotints and lithographs (some I have included in a previous question), that I have tried to identify and determine their provenance. These were from an estate and, frankly, not well kept. The forum has helped me identify some of the artists and I've been able to determine the basic heritage of some of the prints...but it has turned into a massive task. I believe I need professional help, (actually I've been told that before), however I don't know how to go about looking for a reputable art dealer...and I stress reputable. We are located in Chicago; is anyone familiar with an honest, reputable art dealer here in this city? Any help would be much appreciated! JayC |

Wow, want to know what not to do when you're looking to find out the value or saleability of a piece of art...don't contact the Chicago Art Dealers Association. Although I did receive a response from one very nice woman who tried to lead me in the right direction, the majority of responses were terse and unhelpful. I even had the director, of what claims to be the largest gallery specializing in "art-on-paper", tell me that "We don't handle that kind of art", apparently meaning original engravings from mid-19th century art books. I then logged on to their website and found that's precisely what they sell. What's with that? Well, I guess being bombastic goes with that particular profession.
Before I leave the wrong impression, I do appreciate the suggestion to approach the Chicago Art Dealers association...at least I learned something. If anyone has any other suggestion on how I might find a "reputable" art dealer in Chicago that handles old engravings and prints I would really appreciate the information. If you're interested in seeing some of the prints you'll find them in an earlier post of mine, (2 or 3 weeks ago) in this same forum. JayC |

If the prints are taken from books (as opposed to being printed by the artist and hand-signed), then you could try a dealer in the "paper collectibles" community.
You do see such things on eBay -- in fact there's at least one seller who cuts art pictures out of vintage and not-so-vintage magazines and sells them -- but if it's not hand-signed then it can't be considered original art and art dealers probably won't be interested. |

I've seen them on Antique's Roadshow and I know they have a web site. If they are original ones, then they would have an interest in buying them or consigning them I would guess too.
