I first saw this painting years ago. It was in a pictorial about Cher's house and I fell in love with it. Description only says "late 19th century painting of Jesus and Mary Magdalene." Thus, my guess is that it is either Pre-Rafaelite or Victorian. I am downloading a picture here in hopes you can all see it. I am very familiar with the Pre-Raphaelite artists, but have never seen this painting in any of the brotherhoods' works. Even several google searches using the words, "Jesus, Mary Magdalene, 19th century, painting, Pre-Raphaelite and Victorian," produce no results. Not that I could ever afford the real painting, but would love to have someone reproduce it. Thank you kindly. BTW, the picture will be the third one down. http://www.cherworld.com/news/?p=665

I think you're in the right ballpark -- the name that comes to my mind is Holman Hunt -- but you can't see the figures clearly enough to form much of an opinion.
thatcomedian has a good idea. Ask there or maybe in some other Cher fan forum. |

Here's a little info on this painting.
------------------------------------- Cher demonstrates living in style July 10, 2002|By Leah Garchik Cher opens her 16,000- square-foot Italian Renaissance-style villa in Malibu to Architectural Digest this month, and revels in its drama. "It has beautiful pageantry," she tells the magazine, describing the hallmarks of her particular taste. "I like very masculine surfaces done in a very feminine way." Religious paintings abound, including one she bought in Paris 11 years ago, in which Jesus stands with Mary Magdalene in a sunflower garden. Cher said it came from a French convent school, and she considered the work especially amazing because it shows "Jesus wearing a caftan. And I'd never seen a picture of Jesus in a caftan." http://articles.sfgate.com/2002-07-1...jesus-magazine A better view - ![]() Last edited by Eirene : August 29th, 2010 at 03:47 AM. |
