Default Need help asap. Why would a painting have a name plate with artists birth and death

I have this painting and it looks good and old and everything, but there's a name plate on it that has the artists name, title of the painting and also the birth and death of the artists. What does that tell you? Does that mean it could be original, but was sold after his death? Is it likely it's some sort of copiest even though it looks by their hand? Just curious what this might mean. I know it's an original piece and not something digital etc.

The name plate can be added at any time -- in this case it was added some time after the artist's death or else they made a very good guess. :-)

It basically means this is who the owner or seller believes created the painting. It's a useful reference point in case the painting ever becomes separated from all documentation, but in my experience these plates are often wrong so they don't carry very much weight.
