Default Help with monogram

Can anyone tell who's monogram this might be? Is there a good place to try and research monograms like this that are more artistic? This looks like an M and an A with maybe an I going through it. Is there anyway to look at this to guess which order these initials should go in?

Looks like AMI to me. The only painter I can find in the Getty ULAN database identified with those initials, and who alive at the time, is Alexander Ivanovich Morosov, but his signature seems to be totally different.

Default bummer

It's a beautiful watercolor from the late 19th century and I'm just surprised I can't find out who it is. Is there a good source online for watercolorists from the victoria era that your aware of? Maybe I can find it that way. Thanks John for your help!

I don't know about Victorian watercolorists in particular, but findartinfo.com has a huge database and their search facility supports wildcards, which makes it very useful.

Looking at the signature again, it looks like it was written "M" followed by "A" followed by "I". I would think the letters would be written in the same sequence as in the artist's actual monogram, but perhaps not.

Default Is there any other way to do research on this painting

It was bought in England, and has a note on the back. I can make out JL Mathews as the first signer, but haven't seen anything about them. I've looked through so many British watercolor names and I just feel it's got to be by someone important as it seems so good. Any other ways you can think of to search something like this?

I don't know why the back would have so many sets of initials on it. If "JL Mathews" is the artist, I don't know why the monogram would be different. Good luck.

Default I was thinking

I was thinking that maybe it got handed down to different family members over time and they each put their initials. I thought maybe JL Mathews was related to the artist and Mathews could be what the M stands for. I've yet to find any Mathews though.

I'm just so surprised that they are this good, yet that hard to find out who they are.
