Not much available on this artist. Because it's a somewhat common name there are 4 overlapping bios of artists matching this name. I'll include them all because artists don't necessarily work in a single medium for their entire lives. Presumably there could be others as well.
painter Henri-Jean Dubois (1883-1932) Artprice Charlton Hall Galleries? sculptor Ernest Henri Dubois (1863-1931) Courtauld Institute of Art image database Galerie Nataf medallist Henri-Alfred-Auguste Dubois (1859-1943) FineMedals.com designer Raoul Henri Pène Du Bois (1912-1985) (nephew of the painter Guy Pène Du Bois) He seems to have gone by "Raoul", so probably no match. He was a famous Broadway stage designer. He has won a Tony for his work. It might be associated with one of his Broadway plays. Do research on him, his plays, like No No Nanette, Zigfield Follies, he worked with Debbie Renolds. Go to the library and look up Scence and costume designers on broadway in 1920s to the 1970s. Hope that helps. |

I think you might have a painting by Henri Du Bois (1901 - 2000?).
He was born in St Trapez and studied in Paris with Marc Chagall and Rene Aubert. I believe he moved to Canada in 1955 and then on to California in 1966. |

Sounds like we're talking about the same Henri du Bois. I bought a large, very nice du Bois painting in Cleburne, Texas and it had a biography attached that gave the St. Trapez info, as well as the fact that he studied with Marc Chagall, moved to Canada and showed his work in California and Mexico. I looked for more of his work and purchased several pieces on auction from California...mainly water/boat scenes and flowers. I'm trying to put together a website, so if any of you want to send digital images of your paintings with any info on where you purchased them, you can email them to contractwriting@yahoo.com. I'm very interested in putting as much together as I can.

hi, I also have a beautiful painting by this artist. It's a view of several people in a wooded area(park??) ladies with parasols in the impressionistic style. Not sure of the value. I have owned it for about 20 years. Also have info. that states he was born in South of France, went to Canada in 1955 & had showings in Canada & Hawaii. Y

I recently purchased a DuBois signed oil on canvas in Chicago (Oak Park) that has similar attributes mentioned in this thread; Impressionistic, stream / wooded area, one woman standing on the bank; I liked it immediately. I want to confirm who the artist is and am interested in the website idea. I know of a similarly signed painting recently purchased in Florida. |

Henri Dubois was my Grandmother's Grandfather. I, like so many others, have had major problems on locating the right Dubois. I have an original charcoal drawing of actress Sarah Bernhardt signed and dated H. Dubois 1881. The signature is VERY clear! Everytime I try to find work of his, the signatures never match up. I believe he also did Bronze work, as my Grandmother use to have a set of candleabras that he had made. I wish I knew how to share the charcoal drawing with you all, and the signature. If anyone cares to contact me, I can send it to your e-mail via an attachment at chbrady@earthlink.net.

I'm trying to include an image of my Great, Great Grandfather's work here. He "was" Henri Dubois. The image is a charcoal drawing of the late actress Sarah Bernhardt dated 1881.

Well, after a couple of weeks, it looks like I hit, yet another, "dead end" in my search for my great, great Grandfather's info.. I have written to art appraisers all over N.Y., including appraisers from the Antique Roadshow, but alas, no response. I want to thank everyone who took the time to view such a fantastic charcoal drawing that has been part of my family for the past 127 years. One last request John, let's say the only Henri Dubois that fits, is the Henri Alfred Auguste Dubois (the DOB & DOD are the only ones that fit), and I know he did bronze medals, coins & statues, what would someone value this drawing at? Just a long shot....
