Default Please, help me with identifying this painting...

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and hope to find some help with identifying one painting. It resembles a portrait of old man. I'm sorry for very poor photo, but it was made by my mom... If no one knows what it is (I have no idea if it's original, painted by any of known artists), I'll be pleased with any information like possible origin of such painting - Italy, Nederland etc..

Thank you in advance.

Best regards
Maurycy

Hi;

Is this an oil, on canvas or linen perhaps? The subject in the painting looks somewhat familiar. Have you removed it from the frame to check for a signature. I would think that a portrait this well done would have a signature somewhere, unless it was cut down. Any info on the back of the painting?

Edit: This post didn't seem to go through the first time. Second try.

Thank you for your reply. I'm sorry for my late reply but, I haven't info on my e-mail about your post. This is an oil painting, but I'm not sure about the material. I'll check it. It's not visible on the photo, but in the right lower corner, there is probably signature of the artist, but it's covered with paint. Now I'm waiting for info from my mom about any signatures on the back or anywhere. thank you for your support.

regards

Maurycy

Default more info.

Thank you for your post Eirene. I'm sorry for late reply but I didn't receive info on my mailbox about your post. This is oil on linen. There is no signature on the back of the picture. Probably there is a sign in the right lower corner, but it's covered with paint and is unreadable. Painting is mounted in original inner frame (see attachment) and is very fragile. I can't take it from the outer frame. I have information from one person that the age of this painting can be 300 years or more. I have no more info.

Thanks&regards

Maurycy

Sorry Maury...missed this. Just bumping it up. It looks so familiar to me. Someone should recognize this. Is there a museum around that you could perhaps take it to and have someone look at it?

Well, there are some museums in New York , but it's not so easy to get contact with someone who wants to help, just for "thank you".
But I'll try.

Thank you any way.

regards

Give it a try...New York...you never know..there are some that appreciate art...a thank you goes a long way. I shall keep on bumping this one.

Saintmarc...is it an ultra violet light of some type that shows covered over signatures or painting underneath paintings? TY

If I may answer, my understanding is that simple UV is used because oil paint contains chemicals that glow under ultraviolet light, and these chemicals evaporate over the course of many years. Therefore recent touch-ups to a painting will glow more brightly than the original surface.

As for reading below the surface level of paint, I think you need more sophisticated technology for that, such as that used in medical imagery. Frankly my guess would be that the painting is simply unsigned. I doubt that in the normal course of events an artist's signature would ever be painted over.

The examination under Infra red is more suitable for the revealing of hidden writing or sketches. Here is a clear and intelligent article about all these investigations :
