Default Artist/painting identification

I recently acquired what appears to be an oil painting on stretched canvas.
The artist name appears to be F Johnston? On the back of the canvas there is another ? Johnston name marked.
The painting is covered with a thick, roughly applied varnish which is quite dark.
I like the painting but am debating if I should restore it by removing the varnish etc.
How can I distinguish a real original oil painting from a "doctored" giclee.
Identifying the artist would perhaps give me some clues.
I have attached some pictures
Any help is appreciated.

Will
