Can anybody give me some advice about metal etchings please.
I have just bought two beautiful etchings which I think are of Hans Christian Andersen, they are about 24x18, etched on metal and full of amazing tiny details from the fairy tales. the colours are fantastic and I love looking at them . One of the pictures has Hans sitting at a desk, he appears to be dreaming or thinking about the stories and they are floating around the room. there is an exquisite carousel, an airship, the princess and the pea I think, and lots of other tiny pictures. other is a home beneath a tree, with a little mouse and mole sitting in a chair . a young girl is standing next to them. again the detail is superb. If anybody could give me an idea of possible value and any clues about the artist I would be grateful. they are initialled JJ and CAJ intertwined the fames are plain black and i think they may be about 1930ish but I am not very good on dating things, thanks in anticipation |

Sounds like 'Dickens Dream' by R.W. Buss portraying Dickens at his desk at Gad's Hill surrounded by his characters.

Does anyone know who CAJ or JJ is? I have the picture of HCA sitting at his desk by candlelight...My grandmaother gave it to me 30 years ago and I can't find out anything about it. My sister has a winter scene with a pond that is similar as far as the shiney background. Any help will be appreciated!

The initials are for two sisters...
ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Janet Grahame Johnstone (1 June 1928 - 1979) and Anne Grahame Johnstone (1 Jun 1928 - 25 May 1998) were twin sisters and British children's book illustrators best known for their delicate, detailed prolific artwork. Their book illustrating career began to flower in the mid-1950s. The first important book was The Hundred and One Dalmatians--almost tailor made for the twin's unique talents. ABOUT THE DUFEX PROCESS: While not a true lenticular, the Dufex Process (Manufactured by F.J. Warren Ltd.) does use a form of lens structure to animate the image. The process consists of a metallic foil imprinted by litho printing with the image. The foil is then laminated to a thin sheet of card stock that has had a thick layer of wax coated upon it. The heated lamination press has the Dufex embossing plate on its upper plate. The plate has been engraved with angled 'lenses' at different angles so designed as to match the artwork and reflect light at different intensities depending on angle of view. ABOUT FOIL PRINTING: Foil printing is done conventionally using UV formulated transparent inks. Transparent inks are used to allow the reflective quality of the foil and the embossing effect to be appreciated. Any color or number of colors can be specified. The embossing process imparts the three dimensional or "illusion of movement" effect and is carried out from plates made to interact with the printed image. The plates are designed after careful study of the printed image in order to capture the natural reflective phenomena of the real object. It is this that creates the almost holographic appearance of the printed image. Further treatment of the surrounding background area can enhance the three dimensional effect or create the "Illusion of Movement". |

I have one of these etching like prints by Anne Grahame-Johnstone of Hans Christian Andersen sitting at his desk by candle, surrounded by dream like images of his fabulous fairy tales and children’s stories. These stories include Princess & the Pea, The Red Shoes, Under the Willow Tree, The Snow Queen, The Brave Tin Soldier, The Little Mermaid, The Emperor’s New Suit and The Ugly Duckling.
I am selling it on ebay, framed and wondered if anyone is interested. Please check it out at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1108124112...#ht_633wt_1270 Thanks |
