Default please help me find the artist! victorian style

A victorian style painting of two women sitting in window/archway.The painting seems to span out into two seperate rooms. One of the women is doing needlepoint wearing a black shaw around her sholders with long flowing dresses and the other is holding a cup. There is a painting in backround of mary and baby jesus. In the painting there is a dresser with bowl uptop. Two rugs that look oriental on the floor.

There are a few Scandinavian painters from this period who specialized in this type of interior scene, e.g. Carl Holsoe and Vilhelm Hammershøi.

It has more detail inthe painting the holsoe and hamershoi. Not so whimsical with the brush strokes. I wish I had a picture of the painting. It's in my grandmothers house and She says there isnt a visible signature. The one she has is definately a reprint. The thing that stood out the most for me was that the painter used "arches" alot and there was a painting in the backround of mary and baby jesus. There is alot of resemblence of dutch style paintings like vermeer. This has been driving me nuts for weeks!!!

This almost sounds like 'Sampler' by Leonard Campbell Taylor.

I was wondering about Campbell Taylor and why is he so hard to research online. I came across one or two of his paintings when trying to find the "needlework" one you have mentioned, But that is it! Can you tell me more about him and his work? The picture in the other thread is the only one I have seen of this painting so far. very mysterious!

It's strange. There doesn't seem to be a lot known about him or his career, but I'm sure we have more threads about L.C. Taylor than about any other artist -- about a dozen. You can use the "Search" option near the top of the page to find them.

I called my grandmother today to tell her I finally found her painting online. It was so exciting to beable to have an answer to who the artist was and possibly the name of the painting "needlework". She had told me that she acquired the painting 48yrs ago and that it was givin to her by a women in her 70's that recieved it for a wedding gift when she was 21yrs old. So I'm guessing that the painting in over 100yrs old. I'm so greatful for you all that helped find who painted our mystery painting!
I was looking at the "sampler" and another painting of his that looks to be like a hallway. They look almost like a series of the same women in the same house. Just different angles and the women have slight differences in hair style and colors of dresses. If anyone has more info on that it would be an intresting topic. I wish we could get all of his paintings on one site so we can see all his work.
thank you all
mary

Unfortunately the title of this one remains a mystery. I managed to find this late last night. http://www.sothebys.com/app/live/lot...p?lot_id=3V5FQ

There is a lot of info in this old thread -> http://www.artconversation.com/quest...ll-taylor.html

See posts 29 & 30 regarding info on one of the models.

Default The Sampler

I too own a copy of "The Sampler" which I inherited from an aunt who inherited it from her mother. Does anyone know anything about the original -- if it was painted in oil or water color? It appears to have been produced as a limited edition. My "sampler" has some discoloration but otherwise is in good shape. Carolyn
