Quite some time ago (in the 1970's) I was in the US Army, stationed in Baumholder, Germany. I bought a painting of an old white haired man with a white beard and smoking a pipe. He was siting to the right side of his fireplace while mending a fishing net. He had his dog beside him laying on what looked like an oval rug. While many years have passed by and unforscene circumstances have occured, I lost track of that painting and would like to see if I could possibly attain another one just like it. I most likely will never see another one like it, but would much appreciate any help that could be given to me in the search. The painter is unknown and the only information that I can supply is that I bought it between 1972 and 1975 in the Frankfurt area of Germany and the frame was made of real wood and it was fastened together in the corners with black square-headed bolts. It was beautifully done with a hand finished oil rubed wood finish. Thank you for any assistance rendered!

Are you sure he was mending a net? Seems rather odd that net mending would be done inside by a fireplace. Living on the coast I have only ever seen mending done in a net loft or outside.

Your description reminds me of William Lippincott's 'Solid Comfort' minus the net and the pipe.

To: Eirene...
Yes Eirene, I am absolutely sure that it was a fishing net that he was mending. He was siting on the same side of the fireplace as the man in the picture that you sent in responce to my search. The man's body (large framed man with red plaid shirt) was turned more to his left so that he had the light from the fire glowing from his right side, streaming across his body so the light could shine onto what he was doing. He also had a semi-long needle with string attached to it. The artist probably was wanting to convey some comfort and warmth in the painting. That's probably the reason for him to be inside, out of the cold and doing what had to be done. Thank you for your response to my search though.

Well this is about the closest I can come to your description at the moment. No dog and no plaid shirt, however, he does look to be smoking a pipe.

No, Eirene. That isn't it either. But, thank you for trying anyway. I GREATLY appreciate your assistance in finding this painting. I feel that you have done your best in helping me with this task of searching for my lost work of art. I may never be able to find it, but I will still keep looking.

Again, Thank You Very Much!

Take care and have a "MERRY CHRISTMAS & A VERRY HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!"
