Greetings John, Joe and All,
I am doing research for my husband (for high school English). He is in need of a selection of American Artists from 1800 to 1850-ish - to go with the Romantics in literature. I am weak in this area and do not have my American Art textbook. I have visited this link and am overwhelmed with all of the names from which to choose. http://www.artcyclopedia.com/artists...ists-19th.html What artists do you recommend we/I start with? I want some narrative works that the students could respond to in writing. I need artists/works that I can readily find On line. Thanks John for answering my questions. I will get the information shared today. Blessings, Judy Decker |

That's a tough one. I'll have to think about it a bit. It's before the age of the illustrated book, so there was no inherent demand for such paintings or engravings.
The great American narrative artists of that era were probably Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley (neither is on the list you mention, as they were both born in the mid-18th century). Unfortunately they were both expatriates and it's doubtful they would have done anything relevant. Even in Europeam art, the main "books" I have seen illustrated from the first half of the 19th century are the Bible and theatrical scenes from Shakespeare. As for Romanticism in general, as opposed to direct connections to American literature, take a look at our page for that subject. I think there are a total of 5 Americans listed. Not a lot, but a reasonable start. http://www.artcyclopedia.com/history/romanticism.html |
