Can anyone identify this portrait by Marcus Gheerarts the Younger 1565-1635, painted circa 1605/10.

I assume you want to identify the subject of the painting?
What is the complete lettering at the top right? That would be helpful. |

P.S. The hair, nose and beard look to be a general match for Robert Devereux, a frequent subject of portraits by many artists. But this is a very informal portrait for Gheeraerts, no matter who the sitter is.

Thank you for your prompt reply and interest. The writing top right is a partial inscription. Because the painting was cut down at some time the part of the inscription which would give the age of the sitter and date of the portrait is missing. We are left with Aetatis suae.........
Ano......1.... The thought of Robert Devereux as the sitter was considered but the beard of Devereux is more ginger in colour and as you have said the sitter in the unkown painting is very informal. Perhaps a courtier friend of Gheeraerts. |

True about the beard colour, but Devereux is otherwise the closest match I can find.
