Question Which Karl Muller painted this painting ?

We have an old painting that has been passed down through the family. It is signed Karl Muller but after many hours at the computer, I have found 7 artist by that name and 6 more artist by the name Carl Muller. The painting is of an old woman bending down using bellows at a hearth. I have looked at thousands of images and can't find it. where do I start ? It has become my latest obsession. Debbie

If this is an original oil painting, then you probably have the original and you won't find it online. In that case you can try to track down examples of the signatures of these painters.

Also the general style and the subject matter can guide you, as landscape painters and even portrait painters don't usually paint domestic scenes or what is known as "genre paintings" of everyday life. Of course no artist paints exclusively one type of subject, but it's a good rule of thumb.

I never even thought of that, thanks. I'm trying to upload a picture of the painting, but it was taken on a iPhone and I'm having difficulty getting it small enough to work... I'll keep trying.

There's a limit of around 800K bytes, and digital cameras these days often produce images far large than that. You need to resize it or crop it down. Or upload it to another image hosting site such as Flickr and post a link.
