I went to the Van Gogh last year and saw a painting that I can't get out of my head. I jotted down the info on the card which read: Contemplation by Corcos. From searching on the Internet I believe it's Vittorio Matteo Corcos (can't find any other Corcos painters, and it's from his time period, and sounds like his style from descriptions), but I cannot find any paintings by him named "Contemplation". I did not see it looking through collections of his online, though I do think he is the painter as his other works look similar in style and he seemed to do mostly portraits.
The painting, as best I remember, is of a young woman dressed in a black dress and hat, sitting or kneeling in prayer. I believe she had a bible in hand or in her lap. She is facing the viewer. I think there was another woman in black kneeling behind her facing another direction either with her head down or face not shown. Any thoughts? When I went to the Van Gogh Museum's sites they didn't have Corcos for when I was there listed (September 2010), though it seems that their English version listed significantly less info than in Dutch. I'm obviously not educated in art, so I haven't been able to find much on my own, and I waited longer than I should have to jot down characteristics which I would remember, but any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cheers! |

I was just at the Van Gogh on March 6, 2011 and had the same question. I came home and searched for it and found no images of it (yet) on-line. I even emailed the Van Gogh to see if I had the artist and painting name correct. It is indeed Vittorio Matteo Corcos and the painting name is Contemplation.

Good to know. I'll keep looking and let you know if I can find any images, copies, etc. Thank you for confirming!

A lot of times, Musems will only have a couple very special works from the artist, possibly never known to the public before, to see on display. But good luck finding this.

Title says it all - was just wondering if anyone in this thread has found anything more about this painting yet? I have also emailed the van Gogh museum to ask if they will post info and why no they think no info is available publicly...

I believe it's a painting, but the child , mother and dad look like they're all one statue. The child is holding the mother, who is attached to her husband, and he has his arm stretched out to the sky. It's absolutely amazing. I saw it in a Joni Mitchell video featuring the song, 'Both Sides Now'. If anyone knows it's name or origin, artist, I would truly appreciate it!!

I saw contemplation at the Van Gogh museum in 1978....I remember it well
because I own a portrait by Corcos, a portrait with a woman who I believe is the same model.......the Van Gogh museum claims no memory of this painting being there. Thx, I thought that I was crazy! |

No, unfortunately it isn't "Dreams", but thanks for replying. "Contemplation" has awoman dressed in black, I think in a church. I like "Dreams" too though. Thanks for pointing me to that
Haven't been able to find anything else on this. I did email a couple of websites who do reproductions that say to contact them if the painting you're looking for isn't shown. They all have Corcos paintings listed, but not "Contemplation". Hopefully they can come back with something helpful, or even a copy. Will post back on here if I find anything more out. |

The "Rights and Reproductions" department at the Van Gogh Museum was able to find it. I'd emailed the wrong group before... The full information they provided is:
Vittorio Matteo Corcos (1859 - 1933) Overpeinzing ('En prière'), 1889, 85.8 x 79 cm s294M/1974 And they sent me a small picture to confirm (attached). They also let me know that A3 and A4 sized high quality prints are available through the museum at 45 euros and 60 euros respectively. To request an application you can email them here at: <Rightsandreproductions@vangoghmuseum.nl> Hope this info helps anyone else looking for a copy. Thanks to everyone who replied! |
