My girfriend received this painting recently upon the death of her cousin and we don't have much information on it other than what's in the attached letter that came with it. After reviewing some family history it is our understanding that the original owners were wealthy land owners in Palermo, Italy and the painting came to the US somewhere between 1903 and 1913. Unfortunately as described in the letter the painting was cut down due to some flaking around the edges and the signature is no longer in the painting. It is painted on a dark brown canvas but there are no identification marks on the reverse. Any help or direction you can provide us in determining the artist would be greatly appreciated.
