Please help me ID/find out more information about this landscape and the artist! I have searched as best I know how and can not find anything. The canvas is 40''x20'' - I believe it is acryllic or oil (there is some texture to the strokes)
On the frame it says "Artist: S. Scott R.S.P.F.C.A. Sunset in the Orient 1971" There was also an insert that says "Sunset Thailand" Photos attached of painting, frame/insert, signature |

There is a lot about your painting that just doesn't feel right. From the way the surface of the paint still appears somewhat elastic, it does appear to be acrylic, done, of course, on stretched canvas. I am afraid it seems more likely to be by an amateur artist, though, rather than a professional, and because of this, uncovering the correct identification of your artist might prove next to impossible. Regardless of the initials tagged on at the end of the artist's name, the quality of the work just does not seem to hold up to the standards required of most art associations ("R.S.A. stands for "Royal Society of Painters," and "F.C.A." means "Federation of Canadian Artists" although it could also mean "R.S." & ""A.F.C.A.," with the "A.F.C.A." being an offshoot of the same Canadian group). The painting and frame are also problematic, as they appear to be from entirely different eras. This is very misleading, and so not something a credentialed artist would ever likely do, not unless actually incorporating the frame into the artwork. (I do think it was placed there by the artist, as there is red paint on the face of the frame.) I know this is just my opinion, and I am wrong as often as the next person, but I will probably stand by what I've said.
The only Canadian artists I can think of who might fall into the 1972 time period would be Susan Scott or sculptor, Sandy Scott, and your painting seems to be outside their usual genres. I checked the active and inactive artist's lists for both society's mentioned above and the only "Scott" I found is an artist named Jo Scott-B. There were 400 members as of 1980, but not a one with the name "S. Scott," I'm afraid. |
