Default "This is my Captain" print/poster

I have a poster or maybe a print that is titled "The Captain". It is cartoon form, describing how others see the Captain in many ways. It was made for The "Treasure Chest", Rotterdam Holland. It measures about 18" x 26" I think. I can not find any information on this anywhere. I would appreciate help. I do have pictures, but I can't seem to load any? Thanks!

Being an ex-seaman, I can say that this print and others like it, did appear on ships from time to time and were usually purchased in port or were given to the ship by the agent or chandler advertising their services. Similar themes were also occasionally produced onboard by crew members with artistic talents.

So far I have learned this is from about 1960. There is another poster by the same artist titled "The Cargo" I still can't figure out his name however.

Search "Rogier Merkel" and "this is our captain", I believe that is the artist you're looking for. Perhaps he signs his work with a first name only?

Patrick, you're awesome! I still haven't found out a lot, but did get a couple of leads on who to write to thanks to you. And I also finally have the artist's name. Thank you SO much!

Default Old Captain

I have this poster and another in the same vein that is a cutaway of a cargo ship - very funny if you have ever been to sea - lots of easily recognisable stereotypes. I have them both framed on my study wall back in UK but as I am now in Dubai I cant give details (in fact I was looking for details of how to get more copies when I found this post.)

I got mine in eighties in Botlek stores in Europoort harbour Rotterdam. They've been around since I went to sea in the early seventies and maybe before.

I will try googing the artist mentioned.

Default posters from botlek stores - rotterdam

hi Christine: i got those 2 posters a month ago (one for me one for my fatherin-law who is also a Captain!). they cost roughly 10 euros each.

My company ships call regularly there and i visit them there every through the year. If you wish I can help you getting some next time i visit there and -as a favour as certainly the posters are amazing but it is not for me to profit- I will be able to post it to you.

Interesting that I found your post googleing the poster info as also wanted to get more for my captains classmates!

As an employee of the Botlek Stores I might be able to help some of you out. The copy of the poster is sold still, for € 9,90 each. We have three models from the same artist, which is to me also unknown. We have The Captain, The Ship and The Harbour Cruise on sale. As far as I know we import a large bunch of these posters from Canada. I don't know the supplier there. You might be able to get one copy, when you send an e-mail to the shop via their website: www.botlekstores.com .

If that doesnt work out, contact me on sjoerd (at) reverda.nl. I prefer if you first try it via my boss though on the above website.

Sincerely,

Sjoerd

Default Not real painting

Check your painting closely and you may see that they are just canvas prints with a clear coat brushed over them to look like real painting. See how the brush strokes go over two different colors. Not worth any thing, But good looking art!
