Default 1950's night skyline possibly on the Hudson ? Help please

An oil on canvas c.1950.Can anyone please recognize this location?
Quite distinctive buildings, with Art Deco clock.
Seafront lamps and traffic, possibly on the Hudson ?
Barges visible.
Excellent perspective and light.
The hand of a master painter ?
Any help or guidance would be most welcomed.

To my eye this river looks too small to be the Hudson or even the East River. I'm thinking European, but if you can make out the lettering on the clock building it might give you a clue.

Thank you John for you advice.
The writing on the clock is hard to decipher.
The work is signed Edward Hopper '52
I believe he worked for nearly all his life in the New York area.
He did visit Europe in the early 1900's but not later than this.
The canvas has been confirmed as being of the correct date, as it the signature being original to the painting under UV.
The work has not been authenticated and I am in the early stages of my research.
Kind regards,
Kevin

It reminds me of River Street Savannah Georgia as it has the same stylish facade but there could be some poetic licence as I don't remember a clock on the art deco building - but then I was in and out of the bars!
