since all this huge hype on banksy and graff in general about secret identity. it kept coming to mind how eveyones making a big deal about banksy when Maurizio Cattelan, is just as elusive if not more so. and even has a stand in friend, that pretends to be him in all interviews. his sculptures play on similar ideals as of pop surrealists and of street art cred...but with a finer tooth and eye. from a far higher art perspective. still hitting those same nostaligic pop sensibilities. but also very daring, finely executed sculpture. the tiny elevators is a popular piece. working small elevators in a gallery. puts you in a surreal alice in wonderland feeling....what made me scavenge online and find/remember this artist is now puzzling me to remember another just as elusive and strange. another guy. i think hes german or european of some sort. he is very strange almost like a performance artist in his manuerisms and tone. he was really quirky and kept stopping himself from explaining too much or giving too much insight. he also left a level of horror and a playfullness about death and torture that i found pretty interesting. his work was installations made from or of old houses, debri, broken windows, he made weird cold room, bleak rooms, sometimes purposefully without windows or door knobs to escape!. i saw it on the ovation art channel like 3 years ago. at one point he had to quickly tell the interviewer and the cameraman not to shut a particular door. the only way out of the weird designed room. that looked like a bombed out bunker. the door apparantly was like 10 inches or more thick with no door knob! so if anyone went in there alone. they were ****ed!. it almost excited him to reveal little clues like that about his spaces he creates. i believe he also recreated his childhood home inside or directly outside a gallery once too. the strangest part...is that the gallery that represents him also represents "his friend" a female artist whos work is similar to his but with actual characters/objects in the room. to play out these fragmented environs. i cant remember her name. its completely him though. pretending to be another artist. but the work was truly great. and the galleries clearly dont care and allow him to do so. the female version of the work i only saw one piece and its stuck with me ever since. it was a sculpture, possibly wax. of a female figure in a dirt, stained dress, lying face down on the floor. i believe with thick dark blood stains in a dark grey, ****** looking destroyed room. her hair is black and all over the place and theres a giant hammer or wrench or some tool that clearly her head was bashed in with in the room several feet away from her. and its almost like you view it as a crime scene or some ghost reverie. truly stunning. it home so hard bc i have always envisioned of doing film and sculpture work later in my career. and seeing this guy/girls stuff..blew me away.. i think the show was called Art and the City or Art or Not..cant remember. but if anyone knows this guys name or remembers atleast even seeing the same program. itll help me know im not crazy. and also give me a another great example of an artist way more elusive and interesting than banksy or some graff artist that bitches that the high brows wont let them in. clearly sometimes there should be lines drawn for a reason.
please feel free to message me at my email as i found this site on the fly and prob wont remember to come back here. pretty interesting place though..
