I recently came into possession of a wonderful painting which I have uploaded. I see his name is Van Meer. I searched for it online and the picture comes up in google images and I get this artists name, Johannes Vermeer. But under his works I don't see this painting. I'm just wondering if any of you have come across it and know anything about its origins or worth or anything of that sort. Thanks!

Definitely not Vermeer. This looks like a 20th-century painting.

Actually it looks like Charles Van Meer, a 19th-century painter.

Oh, thanks a lot for the help. This is slightly different than those paintings, so you think it was actually Van Meer that painted it? It says authentic original oil on the back but it also says something about a company Artistic Interiors... I'm not sure what that is.

Hard to judge the age of a painting without seeing it, but the resemblence is so great that IMO it's either by Charles Van Meer or else it's a knockoff copying his style.

Hi John and Tanis,
Earlier this week I bought a painting at an auction and after doing some research it seems to be Charles Van Meer painting. I cam across this forum and just wondered if John or Tanis, you knew anything about Charles Van Meer? I would upload a photo like Tanis did but I'm not seeing how to do that. Thanks so much, Dave |

Hi Tanis & John,
I bought a painting this week and after searching the net I believe it's by Charles Van Meer. I have uploaded a picture of it. When I was looking online, this forum and conversation came up and I was wondering if either of you had any more information on Charles Van Meer. I would appreciate any thoughts on the painiting or the artist or both! Thanks for your help |

I have found same info on Charles Van Meer. He was born in 1810 in Belgium and died in the year 1868. He was a painter of genre scenes. Information can be found in the lexicons Berko 1981 and Witt Checklist 1978.

That does appear to be the same artist. There are suggestions online that he was a Belgian painter of the 19th century, but that may not be the same person. Frankly these portraits do not appear to me to be that old, but of course it's hard to make a judgment like that without seeing them in person.

Thanks, MPK. Again, I'm very skeptical that these portraits, every one of which is a similar looking bearded man seated in the same position, are by the same artist who did those genre interiors.

Thanks John and MPK,
John I am not really familiar with 19th C work, but I would say that the painting doesn't look like it's 150 years old. It is very beautiful though and quite large and I really like it. Paid $250 for it from a fellow locally. |

After doing some research I found out that these are not rare or old. They are done by a furniture company to a certain style and signed either Peblam or Van Meer. If you look up Peblam there is more info than Van Meer.
