please help identify artist

This painting was given to me recently. It was purchased at a gallery in New Haven Connecticut in the 1980's. There is no signature, and the black part of the painting is made of something similar to tape and then painted so it is raised from the rest of the painting. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know but you need to change how it is hung. That plastic hook is putting a dent in the canvas.

oh, I know...its already down, but didn't have a photo of it...will take one over this weekend
