Default Artist I.D. please.

Name: Painting 2.jpg
Views: 53
Size: 4.7 KBThis portrait was bought by my wife at a yard sale for two dollars about 20 years ago and had no signature. Some of the painting is in bad shape around the edges. (hence the masking) It was bought here in Seattle but for all we know it could have come from anywhere. Any clues to the artist would be much appreciated. We love the painting as it is so well done and has a romantic air about it. Thanks.

At first glance this seemed reminiscent of the works of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. But there's something about the directness of the gaze that reminds me of one of the later, darker, Symbolist painters -- I believe I am thinking of Franz von Stuck.

Thanks for your reply John. I think the first painter you mention is the closest. I looked up some of his work and within the many portraits he has done some of them have very similar technique and style to our painting. Thanks again. ..........Brian.
