This portrait was bought by my wife at a yard sale for two dollars about 20 years ago and had no signature. Some of the painting is in bad shape around the edges. (hence the masking) It was bought here in Seattle but for all we know it could have come from anywhere. Any clues to the artist would be much appreciated. We love the painting as it is so well done and has a romantic air about it. Thanks. |

At first glance this seemed reminiscent of the works of Jean-Baptiste Greuze. But there's something about the directness of the gaze that reminds me of one of the later, darker, Symbolist painters -- I believe I am thinking of Franz von Stuck.
