I too have this piece of art. It is in black and white and it is signed by Schmalz. In a golden, older frame. Possibly charcoal or a practice piece? I would be interested in learning more about it. Laurie 802-886-1707

Default Penelope, by Herbert Schmalz

I have a colored print of Penelope, pencil signature of Herbert Schmalz, the name Penelope and also in addition the name E. No. Hester. There is also are small embossed initials of:
FN in the left hand corner.
I'm 60 and it was also always hanging in my grandmothers home. It' oval shaped and beautifully mated and frame in it's original state.
I can't find any information on this piece and if it has any value. Does anyone have any information for me?
I am interested in possibly selling it.

I have the picture and the copy right is 1901 the frame is I asume the same age because it has a backing and I would never remove it, after examineing it there are thousands of people in it, you can also see the 3 crosses at a far distance.

I have not removed the paper backing.

Default Value

Just wanted to post this since so many are asking for the value of The Return from Calvary. This is a posting I copied from another forum about The Return from Calvary. We can only hope it is true as it is not verifiable. The posting says:

I myself have a black and white print that is over 100 years old, we paid 5 dollars for it. We went to the Antique Road Show (the one on tv). They appraised it for about 200.00.
