I am in Indiana and have several large pieces by this artist. He owed my grandparents money and I am told he gave them the painting in payment of the debt. My grandparents passed away without giving any more clues than that. They are quite lovely and all nature scenes. Does anyone know anything about him?

I, too, am looking for information on an artist Elmer C. Stewart. He seems to have had a lot of talent. The Stewart painting I have is very well done, and is in the nature of a humorous Norman Rockwell illustration. Its signature is the same as a Madonna & Child painting recently on e-Bay (auction ended 6/5/08 with apparently no bids). In both paintings, the facial expressions are very nice. Help, anyone?

I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I recently purchased a beautiful oil painting by Elmer Stewart of a sea scene with sail boats. It has beautiful frame. I have not been able to find out anything about the artist.

When I was a teenager I used to visit a friend who lived across the street from Elmer. I was in his studio many times and even watched him work a little. He was a small man in stature but very strong and wiry. He also did some sculpting. There is a woman here in Whitley County that has two of his paintings. I recently saw them. Both landscape scenes.

Elmer Stewart was a resident of Blue Lake, Churubusco, Indiana. That is about 10 miles north of Fort Wayne, Indiana on US Highway 33. He did travel through out the US painting outdoor scenes. I have two of his paintings. One of a winter scene in Washington State, and the other of El Capitian in Yosemite National Park in California. His price ranges from $50.00 to $400.00.

buscoartguy is correct. I also have an Elmer Stewart seashore painting with high cliffs in the background. I delivered papers to Elmer when I was a kid 1954-55. He lived on the east end of Blue Lake (RR 1, Churubusco) in a big (not too well maintained house) next to what was called the channels. He was a nice guy but was a bit of a recluse. I don’t remember it I bought the painting or if he gave it to me.

I did some internet checking of Whitley County library records and found that Elmer C. Stewart died December 6, 1962. If someone has the time they can go to the Whitley County offices in Columbia City, check the death & estate records for more details. It may be some time before I'm able to do this.

As a young girl, my mother lived next to Elmer Stewart at Blue Lake, Indiana
during the summers in the late 1930's. Our family has two paintings by Elmer Stewart- One is a sailing scene of two schooner type boats approaching a bouy, ocean waters with a rugged shore behind. The second is a winter snowy farm scene with a horse drawn sleigh approaching the house and barn. My grandfather had several of his paintings, including a painting of the family dog - a Pomeranian, which he commissioned Elmer paint. My Mother said that Elmer made a living painting Murals in churches, schools and hospitals....maybe that is why a previous post stated that he travelled around the country....maybe he was part of the Roosevelt "Federal Arts Project" and PWAP that put artists to work during the depression? Maybe there is a record of murals attributed to him? My Mother also said that Elmer used photos from National Geographic Magazine as reference for his paintings and had a large bookcase full of them. Perhaps this aided his painting seascapes from the center of Indiana. Elmer was engaged to be married, but his fiance became ill and died, my Mother thinks he remained a bachelor, and always lived alone. I would be interested in seeing photos of his paintings that other posters have. Is there a way to post them on this website? |

My name is Krista Stewart and Elmer Stewart was the brother of my grandfather. I met Elmer on only a couple of occasions. I was a very young child when we did go to his house. He did live alone and was a recluse. My sister and brother each have one of his paintings. I don't have one. It is my understanding that when Elmer died, people went into his house and stole many of his pictures. Whether or not that is true, I don't know. I will refer my sister to this website and see if she can add any information. I live in Virginia, but my sister is still in Indiana and has done much study on the family. I have been thinking of Elmer because my cousins recently gave me a photo him. That is why I decided to look for info on him on the interenet. If you can send me a photo of any of his pictures, I would really appreciate it.

I was very interested to read the info about Elmer Stewart. I lived next door to him in 1950 at Blue Lake. He added an addition to his little house and it was his gallery and studio. I loved to watch him paint and he let me watch him whenever I pleased. I have 3 of his paintings. One of the ocean, a landscape of a farm with sheep and the best one is Royality on a Fence. It is of an old man and a young girl. I think it is of King George and the now Queen Elizabeth. He used to paint from the newspaper. I also have a statue of the Virgin Mary that he painted for me. Elmer painted murals in churches and statues in Catholic churches. He was a recluse and had a model T ford he used to go into the town of Churubusco. I remember him making a hugh turtle that had a car under it and he used to drive it in parades. He called it the Beast of Busco. The story goes, someone saw a very large turtle in Blue Lake and through out the years the turtle, got bigger and bigger. So Elmer made a hugh turtle. As a kid, he was so much fun to live next door to, someone so creative. My father owned Felix Juke Boxes and he knew a lot of people in Churubusco.

I lived at blue lake down around the corner from elmer as akid ( I actually named a descented skunk I got for a pet in fort wayne after elmer, because i liked him so much) used to go to his house/studio quite often my sister and I llewellyns lived across the street from elmer. i loved goining there to visit and watch elmer, i loved the smell of the oils, he had very old records players that had the round tins< not tin, that had holes punched in them, the round cylinder recordings, old victrolia, etc. i spent hours thre, i think his pictures were great, i think he had trouble painting hands or eyes, probably most hhis pictures were of nature. He had a boathouse in back of his back yard, it had an upper level with a swing, lot of kids spent time there, and fishing on the pier below it. i used to have a picture of it somewhere. i was thinking he had a bump on his head we always thought he got in a wreck, i just loved him, but i dont know who was shyer him or me, but he would answer questions, it was a sad day for me and some others when he died. those were my happiest days other than fishing, beach, building huts across the channel , i miss him alot.

Elmer was a friend of my grandfather - Gerge Gillie - and was very close to him. He lived very near Elmer on Blue lake and helped him repair his house and spent a good deal of time visiting him. I do remember visiting him and seeing these murals painted everywhere in the house. He also gave my grandfather a large painting of an old man playing a violin to give to my mom when she married my dad. We now have the painting in our house.
I remember him as a wonderful and eccentric gentleman. Bill Evans Pensacola, FL |

I have a painting by Elmer C. Stewart hanging on my wall that I had bought at an estate sale in the small town of Wabash in Ohio near the Indiana border. It's a close up painting of 2 old men measuring the distance of horseshoes from a horseshoe stake. The painting was leaning against an old shed at the auction and I was suprised that I was the only bidder and bought it for only $3.00. I always figured that it was a painting by a local guy.

I was just in Dunsany Castle in Ireland, and there was this painting of two girls. One on the left was dressed in a light dress the girl on the right was in front of a dark wall dressed in a dark dress. The story behind the painting was that these girls were friends, and the girl on the left (in the light colored dress) her father was going to have a painting done of them. Before it was done the girl on the right died...they had the painting done anyway and that is the reason for the coloring of the dresses. One represents life and the other death.
Any ideas about the name of the painting or the artist? I loved this piece of artwork, but for the life of me~cannot remember names of either...please help! Thank you! |
