This one is going to be tough. I saw a reproduction of a painting that I have seen in a museum somewhere but can't remember where. I have no photo of the painting to post. It's a large canvas representing the arrival of someone important in Venice. (It's not the arrival of the French ambassador by Carpaccio). On the left we see the Doge's palace which slopes away diagonally towards the center. The arriving dignitaries are disembarking from boats in the harbor and crossing some wooden jetties to reach the shore where they are met by other dignitaries. Many of them are wearing metal helmets and are dressed in antique style. The reproduction I saw was on fabric so the details were not so clear but I would say the painting is from the 16th-18th centuries.
The composition reminds me of Veronese, the historical dress of Poussin. I'll be so glad if anyone can point me on the right track! |

Perhaps Giovanni Antonio Canal better known as Canaletto.

My bad. I said it wasn't Carpaccio's arrival of the French ambassador - I meant that it wasn't Canaletto! And as I said it shows the doge's palace on the left. It's not going to be so easy...

Just a thought....perhaps the fabric print is in reverse of what the actual painting is. As seen in this painting by Luca Carlevaris.

The only paintings I have located regarding arrivals at the Doge's Palace are: Luca Carlevaris/ Entry of the Earl of Manchester into the Doge's Palace.
Canaletto/ Arrival of the French Ambassador. Vittore Carpaccio/ Arrival of the English Ambassadors. Andrea Michieli/ Arrival of the Dogaressa - Morosina Morosini Grimani in 1597. I would be quite content to live in a Canaletto painting. |

Alas, none of those correspond to my mystery picture. But you are right - if one absolutely had to live with a Canaletto it wouldn't be the worst situation.
