Looks like the signature might be Greek? The subject looks like it could be in Greece also.

Yes I thought the same thing!! I have searched and searched on the Internet and cannot find Any Info! I do not have any info on original owner I bought it at an estate sale in michigan. The only known word on the Internet mrapxis? Is in too really old books one from old Greek testament but it's all in another language and I do not understand it! The painting is so interesting looks like medevil castle lowering something in a net? Can't figure out what it is lowering? Thank you for your help I will keep on searching until I found out anymore info! Any more info will be greatly appreciated!

Do you have access to anyone who speaks Greek? They would have more insight into what the letters are and what the signature might read.

I had this in an email about the painting: this comment is from someone that has not seen the painting but tried to interpret the name I. Mrapxis
I can't think of a Greek name resembling that. Was it in Latin characters or Greek? There are no r or j characters in Greek, which makes me suspect this is not a Greek name. |

The painting was purchased at an estate sale where 90 percent of the items were from Athens so I'm thinking it's Greek! Any help would be awesome!

I tried to read the letters at least, and I got this:
Mu iota alpha rho chi eta sigma (Μιαρχης). But nothing likely came up, either searching in Greek or transliterating it to English characters, so I think at least 1 character must be incorrect. |

I'm not sure what it means or if it's the artists name?I do not know much about art but it is a very interesting painting to me it looks like that might be a body in the net and maybe medevil times? Very interested I'm so anxious to find out more about the era but it's hard to know when I don't know where it originated? I appreciate your help!
