Default Art symbolism

Where do I find information about the meaning of certain symbols used in Old Masters' paintings? Is it true that a cat in a picture is the symbol for danger?

Not sure about where you can read up on art symbolism, but I just saw a Renaissance painting last week where the cat was supposedly a symbol of man's lower nature. (There was a bird in the picture and the idea is that the cat would happily kill the bird without thinking.)
