Identify Painting or Artist

I was hoping someone may be able to help me identify the painter or name of painting?
This was my Grandmothers, from NY. It has been in the family for as long as I can remember (back from the 1940's), I have no idea where or when they got it.
Any help is appreciated.

It looks like an french charcoal around 1860. Isn't there a letter or monogram behind the head of the boy? If so, best photo of this area please
